Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) is a key requirement of OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standard, 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA’s Risk Management Program (RMP) rule, 40 CFR Part 68. These regulations require that PHAs address toxic, fire, and explosion hazards resulting from specific chemicals and their possible impacts on employees, the public and the environment. Therefore the process hazard analysis methodology selected must be appropriate to the complexity of the process and must identify, evaluate, and control the hazards involved in the process.
Dust hazards analysis (DHA) is required by NFPA in their standard, NFPA 652,
Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust.
This standard applies to any facility handling combustible dust or combustible particulate solids. Although a relatively new term, DHA, application of hazard analysis to dust processing facilities is not new. A pioneer in DHA, ioKinetic engineers have been performing these types of analyses for almost 10 years at a wide variety of facilities, including specialty chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and plastic. We have developed a unique checklist-based approach that ensures that processes are evaluated against current codes and standards in a timely and efficient manner.
