Limiting Oxygen Concentration Testing

The limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) provides insight into the lowest concentration of oxygen that will propagate a flame. LOC is needed if inerting is the basis of safety for explosion prevention. This data can be used to design inerting systems for prevention against combustible dust explosions.

Instrument

20-L Sphere Apparatus

20-L Sphere Apparatus manufactured by Kühner AG of Switzerland

Applicable Standard

ASTM E2931 Standard Test Method for Limiting Oxygen (Oxidant) Concentration of Combustible Dust Clouds. This test method provides the limiting oxygen concentration of a dust cloud dispersed in a mixture of air with an inert gas.

Sample Results

Sample Requirements

Approximately 250 g of material is required.

Sample Preparation

A note on particle size and moisture level for testing. ASTM recommends that dust samples tested be made up of at least 95% minus 200 mesh (75 micron) size particles. However, “as-received” testing of samples is allowed. Moisture content should be less than 5%. The decision on sample preparation should be based on how the data is to be used.
