Overheating Testing

Overheating testing is a battery safety test in which the cell is intentionally heated from the outside in a controlled and continuous manner. Unlike the Heat-Wait-Search (HWS) test, this test is designed to force the battery toward failure conditions so that its response under extreme thermal stress can be measured. Using the EVx Accelerating Rate Calorimeter, external heat is applied to the battery, closely simulating real-world scenarios such as fire exposure, loss of cooling, or thermal propagation from neighboring cells.

Thermal Hazard Technology EVx ARC®
The EVx Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC®) is a specialized safety testing device used to study the thermal runaway behavior of large-format electric vehicle (EV) batteries, modules, and small packs. It simulates a self-heating scenario by raising the temperature of a battery until it starts to self-heat, then operates in a near-adiabatic mode to accelerate the reaction and collect data on temperature and pressure rise.
